Sanguinarine is a toxin that kills animal cells through its action on the Na +-K +-ATPase transmembrane protein. Tyrosine or phenylalanine is common precursor for the biosynthesis of both. Berberine and Sanguinarine both are isoquinoline derivatives and belong to protoberberine and benzophenanthridines, respectively.
